Anatomy of Motivation

There is something in quantum physics called the fluctuation-dissipation theory, where it ties the loss of energy, of a specific system to the internal fluctuations of its state. Take for example how you start your day with a burst of energy and a set plan of action for your day. Then before you get started with step 1 you are distracted by having to get coffee, then a friend texts you, then you finally complete your step 1 and before you know it you're browsing youtube/google. You begin to wane and siphon your energy into smaller tasks that are deviating you from your end goal and causing a dissipation of your energy.
